A One-Year-Old’s Mermaid Birthday Party

Let’s go under the sea and into our pocketbooks…

mermaid first birthday party

Zoey turns one and Mama goes a little crazy – well maybe, how much are you supposed to spend on a one-year-old’s birthday party for 25 people?

I’m breaking it down for you here (hopefully my husband doesn’t read this one):

Etsy Shopping –
$8 Custom Party Hat (store is no longer available but here is something similar and you get 8 hats)

$12 for 50 Colored Paper Straws

$28.50 Custom Birthday Banner (this one is also not available here is another one that is similar)

$7.50 Centerpiece (same shop as the banner that is not available but try this one)

Invitations – made my own for about $17 for 25 cards (don’t forget the stamps!)
Thank you cards – found them for $3 for 25 cards at Marshalls (a total steal and they are really cute)
Dollar Store Shopping
$2 Outdoor table cloths
$4 Pool floaties for the kids
Party Gifts for the Kids (9 total)
$9 Colorful Sand Pails to match our theme
$3 Bubbles (packs of four)
$3 Pool toys (packs of four)
$3 Cracker Jacks (packs of four)
Other decorating DIY at Michaels (use that 40% off coupon!)
$5 Nautical Wheel that I painted in the colors of the party theme
$12 Cupcake embellishments –e.g cup cake holders, edible pearls, blue sparkle sprinkles
$6 Gift tags for the party gifts + Letter stamps for the names on the gift tags
$8 Tissue Paper for the pom poms + the floral wire to make the pom poms
(here is a pom-pom tutorial)
Oriental Trading Company for more party supplies
$12 Plates (8 for $3)
$8 Napkins (16 for $2.25)
$4.5 Cups (8 for $2)
+$6.99 Shipping
The Food!
$30 Chicken Burger and Meatloaf sliders (3lbs of ground chicken, 3lbs of ground beef + buns)
$15 Chips (4 bags)
$4 Carrots
$6 Ranch Dip
$8 Hummus
$4 Watermelon (2 medium sized)
$0 Water infused with lemon – just made a pitcher
$10 Capri Sun (variety pack of 40)
$6 Sodas (2 cases)
$10 Strawberry cupcakes with cream cheese frosting (two boxes of cake mix, three cans of already made frosting)
$10 Homemade carrot cake with homemade whipped cream frosting
(Here is how I made the fish cake from an earlier blog post)
Zs Outfit
$13 Aqua blue tutu from Target dancewear collection
$13 Gap mermaid PJ top (this one is out of stock/and out of season but here is the shop where I got it)
The entertainment was free – it was a pool party at my Mom’s, you couldn’t get the kids out of the water.  (Mom also had plenty of tables and chairs so we didn’t have to rent anything)
And the Grand Total is just about 300 smackeroos.
Good? Bad?

And just for fun – two really cool toys Z got for her birthday – Laugh & Learn Baby iPhone Case and Trumpette “Howdy Cow” (in pink!)

  1. Hi,

I love your mermaid party ideas. I’m throwing a mermaid party for my 1-year old in a couple weeks (who also is named Zoey!) I’m getting a lot of good ideas from your post. I love the cute paper straws and pom-poms :)

  2. Hey! Quick question that’s entirely off topic.
Do you know how to make your site mobile friendly? My weblog looks weird when viewing from my iphone4.
I’m trying to find a theme or plugin that might be able to resolve this issue.
If you have any suggestions, please share. Cheers!
